The Battle of Stamford Bridge was between the Viking forces under Harald Hadrada and the English forces headed by Harold II. The battle is known as one of the "most horrific and bloody battles in history" was eventually won by the English army. Harald Hadrada was killed in the battle along with his co-captain Tostig. Many historians see this battle as the last of the great Viking age. Harold II's victory was short lived for days later he was defeated by the strong Norman force invading in the south.
