Edward the Confessor reigned from 1042-1066. Edward was the son of Richard I of Normandy. Edward spent the first half of his life in exile in Normandy. He eventually returned and took the throne in 1042. His reign was prosperous, and up unto the end, peaceful. Though Edward had the title "King" the real ruler of England during his reign was the powerful Godwinson, Earl of Wessex. Edward eventually exiled Godwinson, but him and his sons eventually returned. When Godwinson died, his lands were given to his son Harold. Harold became the new king after Edward died.
